The Globe

Until about 1960 two granite globes adorned the top of the porch of Sheldon Library. Then in 1960 the globes were removed (the solid granite weighed over a ton and caused a roof leak) and the porch glassed in. In the summer of 1986 the globe, which had been lost in the intervening years, was recovered and placed on the path of the astronomy center to serve as its landmark. The charthouse can also be seen in the lower right of the historical photograph seen below. Trees have since grown in as an attempt in blocking city lights.
